Emergency Care

During orthodontic treatment, occasional mouth injuries can occur. These emergencies typically fall into two categories:

Orthodontic Appliance Issues

Orthodontic treatment may lead to emergencies related to appliance issues. Should you encounter loose bands, brackets, or wires causing discomfort, please contact our office promptly during patient hours to schedule an appointment.

To ensure efficient care, it’s essential to call ahead rather than walk in. Here are some steps to manage common issues at home:

  • Irritating Tie Wire: Use beeswax to cover the wire or gently tuck it under the archwire using a blunt object like a pencil eraser or Q-tip.
  • Loose Band or Bracket: If a band or bracket becomes loose, leave it in place and contact us during patient hours to arrange for reattachment, if necessary.
  • Broken or Poking Archwire: Attempt to alleviate discomfort by bending the wire with a pencil eraser or carefully cutting it with nail clippers. For persistent issues, contact our office for further assistance.

Direct Mouth and Tooth Injuries

In cases of direct injury to the mouth or teeth, immediate action is crucial. Begin by applying ice to the affected area and promptly contact your regular dentist. They will assess the injury, possibly including an x-ray, to determine the extent of damage.

For displaced, knocked-out, or fractured teeth, your family dentist is best equipped to provide initial treatment due to their access to necessary materials and anesthesia.
